Major works in store for Luxembourg's railways

A number of major engineering works will be carried out on six main train lines throughout 2018.

CFL, the national railway company, said the maintenance, upgrade and extension works would take place mainly during weekends and school holidays but that some of the works would extend over several weeks.

Replacement buses will be organised where trains are not running, and rail users are being warned to allow extra time to reach their destination.

These are the train lines that will be affected.

Line 10
Luxembourg-Troisvierges-Gouvy

Several stations along this line will undergo upgrading and maintenance works:

• Mersch
  Works on disabled access
  Preparation for the future P+R
• Lorentzweiler
  Station maintenance works
  Upgrade on the crossing on Rue de l'Alzette
• Ettelbruck
  Preparations for the new interchange hub
  Upgrade of track appliances and installation of electric tractions

Luxembourg-Wasserbillig-Trier

Works on this line are due to increasing network capacities, as well as the construction of the new viaduct in Pulvermühle and the double track between Luxembourg and Sandweiler-Contern.

Line 50
Luxembourg-Kleinbettingen-Arlon

Extension works will be carried out to standardise the power system across the network. According to CFL, this will ease cross-border traffic between Luxembourg and Belgium.

The following sections will be blocked during these dates:

Between Luxembourg and Arlon
31 March – 15 April
14 July – 16 September

Line 60
Luxembourg-Esch-sur-Alzette-Rodange, and
Line 90
Luxembourg-Bettembourg-Thionville

The aim is to ease congestion on both lines, in particular between Luxembourg and Bettembourg and between Rodange and Pétange. Some rail facilities will be upgraded, and some passenger crossings will be removed.

Works include building the new Bettembourg-Luxembourg line, preparations ahead of the interchange hub in Howald, preparations to remove three passenger crossings in Schifflange and upgrading works on rail facilities on sections of Line 60.

Between Esch-sur-Alzette and Rodange

Line 70
Luxembourg-Rodange-Longwy

This is due to upgrade works around Bascharage and the Schouweiler stop.

1 December – 2 December
