Police had to use pepper spray to break up a mass brawl outside a Differdange snack bar on Friday night.

Altogether 10 people were reportedly involved in the fight, grabbing chairs, poles and whatever they could get their hands on to cause harm or defend themselves.

The fight had broken out in rue Emile Mark at around 9pm when police intervened. Unable to control the volatile group, the officers had to call for backup. When pepper spray was used to subdue the crowd, a number of those involved fled. Four people were arrested.

Later that night police were called to a violent mugging in Esch-sur-Alzette where a man had been struck with a bottle on the head. The man told police that four men had stolen his mobile phone as he gave them a cigarette while at a bar in rue du Brill at around 3.20am.

When he confronted them, he was struck over the head with a bottle and suffered facial cuts. Despite his injury, the victim had memorised the number plate of the suspect's vehicle.

Police later found the car in rue de Hollerich, in Luxembourg City. It is suspected that the car's driver and accomplices may have been responsible for a number of other robberies committed the same evening. An investigation is ongoing.
