(CS) While the beginning of astronomical summer is still a few weeks away, meteorological summer kicked off on June 1, with weather forecasts predicting temperatures of up to 30°C for Luxembourg this week.

Why are there two beginnings to summer? While astronomical summer is based on the position of the Earth in relation of the sun, meteorological summer is based on the annual temperature patterns and covers all of June, July and August in the northern hemisphere.

Maybe of more interest is the fact that the somewhat chillier temperatures of the past days are set to look like a thing of the past later this week, when weather forecasts predict thermometers to reach between 27°C and 30°C with sunny skies.

However, the high temperatures will come paired with high humidity and the chance of thunder storms on Friday, according to national weather service Meteolux.

While long-term forecasts have a habit of being somewhat unreliable, the weekend thus far is looking to be warm and sunny, with some clouds. Check out a list of outdoor bathing spots in Luxembourg here.
