(CS) Some 1,400 invited guests celebrated the opening of the new Belle Etoile shopping centre, with Economy Minister Etienne Schneider and Minister of the Middle Classes Françoise Hetto-Gaasch among the guests of honour.

The extension of the Belle Etoile shopping centre in Bertange offers 35 new stores making it the largest shopping centre in the Greater Region.

A special three-day programme marks the opening of the extension.

Shoppers taking a first look at the new stores on Thursday will receive a glass of Crémant and a piece of cake, with live music at 3.30pm.

On Friday shops will be open until midnight with Samba performances, games and activities to keep shopaholics entertained.

On Saturday meanwhile there will be music and entertainment throughout the day.

Across the three days, the Cactus supermarket at the Belle Etoile will offer a 10 percent discount.

At the grand opening on Wednesday evening, Minister Françoise Hetto-Gaasch praised the development, which created 350 new jobs. Economy Minister Etienne Schneider highlighted the stability of the Cactus Group, which runs the Belle Etoile, saying it had proved its competitiveness in times of economic crisis.

The extension came with a price tag of 50 million euros, bringing the total number of shops up to 105.
