New radar begins checking for speeding drivers
Luxembourg is unleashing a new weapon on Monday in its fight against speeding drivers.
The transportation ministry said newly installed radar units will measure the average speed of vehicles crossing a nearly 4 km stretch of road northeast of Luxembourg City from Monday.
The top speed on the N11 between Waldhof and Gonderange is 90 km per hour for cars, and 75 km per hour for trucks.
The system involves radar columns fitted with infrared cameras installed at each end of the section and overall speed is calculated over the distance instead of at a specific point, the ministry said.
License plates of vehicles exceeding the limit are photographed and the data is automatically reported. The systems also will be used in tunnels later, the ministry said previously. Traffic light radars, which detect drivers who enter an intersection despite a red light, are scheduled to be installed later.
Radar-equipped speed cameras have been in use in Luxembourg for four years and caught more than a million violations.
Most of the 282,000 speeding cases last year were in construction zones and resulted in fines of between €49 and €150.
