No decision on Schifflange asphalt plant
(CS/na) Luxembourg Delegate Minister for Sustainable Development Marco Schank will not be able to make a final decision on a controversial asphalt plant in Schifflange after a parliamentary committee submitted several questions that need to be addressed first.
Schank had previously announced that he would make a decision before the October 20 elections and not delay the issue.
However, the parliamentary petitions committee has submitted several questions, which need to be looked into before a final decision can be made, Schank said on Thursday.
Local authorities and residents have opposed the construction of an ashpalt plant at the “Um Monkeler” industrial zone, fearing pollution in the area amid other concerns, such as an unmanageable increase in traffic in the area.
Additionally, questions have now been raised around whether the site's development plan even allows for the construction of such a plant.
Schank said that the Interior Ministry needs to clear up this issue. Only once it is known that the construction of a plant is allowed can a decision be made about handing out an operating licence.
