Oh what a night! New Year celebrations in Luxembourg

Luxembourg's capital had plenty of reasons to celebrate on Tuesday night when bars and restaurants were filled to the brim and revellers crammed into the streets.

Of course they were out to see in the New Year with good food, good company and perhaps a few drinks.

But, it was not only the beginning of 2014 which they welcomed. January 1 marked the start of a smoking ban in Luxembourg's bars and cafés and while venues allowed smokers one last night to light up on Tuesday night, when they open again on Wednesday or Thursday, the ashtrays will no longer be out, unless venues offer a ventilated smoking room.

Away from the bars, revellers who chose to celebrate the New Year at private homes across the Grand Duchy provided a stunning display of fireworks to anyone looking on.

At the time of publishing, Luxembourg Police were unable to provide a breakdown of calls on the night of December 31 and January 1.
