(CS) A recent survey has found that only 23 percent of the Luxembourg population carries an organ donor card, with over 60 percent saying they are not well informed about organ donation.

These results were presented by TNS Ilres as part of the “Politmonitor” study commissioned by the Luxemburger Wort and RTL.

In the study, 77 percent of respondents indicated that they did not carry an organ donor card. Of these, 65 percent said that they are not well informed about organ donation. However, of the people saying they are not well informed, some 66 percent said they would be able to make a decision on the matter if they knew more about it.

While all Luxembourg residents are considered organ donors unless they speak out against organ donation during their lifetime, hospitals usually leave the decision up to the family of the deceased.

Plans to improve donor numbers

A new checklist, however, is aimed at finding out how many organs could have been harvested, and where the chance for organ donation was missed.

Luxembourg organ donation numbers, meanwhile, fluctuate a lot. While there were nine in 2008, there were none in 2009, three in 2010 and nine in 2011. This year so far there have been two.

The donations are coordinated by LuxTransplant, which aims to improve awareness on the issue together with the Health Ministry. Plans to improve the situation for example include a creation of a national database of organ donors or the integration of this information into electronic patient files.

Additionally, there are plans to re-introduce donor operations in the Grand Duchy, as the country delivers organs but does not actually transplant them.
