(CS) The Oxford and Cambridge Societies hosted a reunion weekend for alumni from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the Grand Duchy in June, with an evening of music and a gala dinner.

The weekend started with a welcome reception, where alumni were greeted by former head of the European Investment Fund Francis Carpenter, as well as former City of Luxembourg mayor Colette Flesch.

The highlight of the weekend was a concert on June 29 at the St Jean du Grund church, where countertenor Christopher Robson and lutenist Axel Wolff performed songs by English Renaissance composer John Dowland (1563 – 1626) and Philip Rosseter (1567/68 – 1623), as well as reading sonnets by William Shakespeare and John Donne.

The event was open to the public and proceeds were donated to SOS Children's Villages.

The concert was followed by a private dinner at the Cercle Münster in the Grund, where some 70 guests were joined by British Ambassador to Luxembourg and Cambridge alumna Alice Walpole.

Over the course of the weekend, visitors and Luxembourg alumni also went on a tour of the capital, visited the “Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg” and the “Dräi Eechelen” fortress museum in Kirchberg, as well as being able to take a look at the art collection of the European Investment Bank.

More gastronomic treats were in store, such as a visit to the MUDAM café and a serving of Luxembourg specialties at “Am Tiirmschen” and the “Goethe Stuff”.

Organisers hope that this reunion weekend will lead to closer ties between the Oxford and Cambridge Societies in the Benelux and Germany.
