Luxembourg on Sunday severed air travel from Great Britain, which is confronting a more-contagious version of the virus that causes Covid-19, acting in line with similar travel bans across Europe.

The ban on passenger flights from the United Kingdom would be in effect for at least 24 hours "and pending new conclusive scientific knowledge", Luxembourg's government said. Similar bans were imposed on Sunday by France, Germany, Belgium and other EU countries.

More than 16 million in London and southeast England were required to stay home as a full lockdown came into force on Sunday in an effort to contain the rapid spread of the new coronavirus strain.

Luxembourg also recorded four additional deaths on Sunday, pushing the death toll from the disease to 444, while 424 people were detected with new infections, the Health Ministry said.
