(AFP/CS) A South African magistrate on Friday ordered Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, to return to court on June 4 after he granted him bail.

As part of the bail conditions, magistrate Desmond Nair also said Pistorius "shall refrain from using any prohibited substance and or alcohol."

Bail was set at one million rand, around 85,000 euros.

When Nair started reading out the ruling Pistorius sobbed and his shoulders shook visibly, prompting the magistrate to pause briefly asking the athlete: "Are you OK there?"

The magistrate read out detailed testimony of Pistorius' version of events on the night his model and law graduate girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was killed at his heavily secured home.

"The deceased died in his arms," Nair said.

Pistorius later regained his composure as the magistrate delved into the history of bail law in South Africa.

Nair said he would look at the application in the context of a pre-meditated murder.

"I will approach it in that vein," he said.
