A pond of concrete has formed in a wooded area closed to the American Military Cemetery in Luxembourg, likely caused by pollution.

The area in Hamm, which is around 100 metres wide and 500 metres long, is covered with a grey, concrete-like substance and is visible from the road, Luxembourg newspaper Tageblatt reported.

The area is thought to have been contaminated by sediment from a nearby industrial plant. The Tageblatt said Environment Minister Carole Dieschbourg is aware of the situation and was on-site with officials to survey the damage last Thursday.

The industrial plant in question told the Tageblatt that this kind of occurrence happened from time to time when it rained heavily because the company is on a hill.

Ms Dieschbourg, however, has summoned the site's managers and police. A complaint is likely to be lodged and the plant will be responsible for cleaning up the contaminated site.
