Since May, a nighttime driving ban has been in force in several streets in the Gare district of Luxembourg City, notably Rue Heldenstein, parts of Rue de la Fonderie, as well as the lower section of Rue de Strasbourg. The objective has been to stop the spread of prostitution in the area, which has seen a sharp increase recently.

A noticeable increase in police presence can now be seen patrolling the streets in the area. Sunday night, for example, saw a total of 14 officers systematically monitoring the streets, among them – two dog handlers from the nearby police unit.

While the streets were being controlled on foot, traffic police were simultaneously checking whether the driving ban, enforced on several streets in the district, was being respected. In several cases it was not, and in total twelve penalty points were issued to drivers' licences.

The police will continue to patrol the Gare district and as well as monitoring prostitution and traffic, restaurants will also be subject to investigations.
