(CS) With a total of 175,000 euros raised, this year's relay for life event organised by the Luxembourg cancer foundation broke all previous records since 2006.

The event saw 8,789 runners across 332 teams running for either 12 or 24 hours straight. Over 3,800 candles were sold, which were lit on the day to remember the victims of cancer.

Visitors also clocked in some 4,315 kilometres on the indoor-bike challenge sponsored by Enovos, with the electricity company donating one euro for every kilometre pedalled.

It was the first time that the Fondation Cancer exhibited its giant colon model to raise awareness for colon cancer prevention, with over 2,000 visitors taking a closer look.

Of the money raised, 167,271 euros will go to the Fondation Cancer Luxembourg for patient care and cancer prevention measures. The remaining 7,649 will go to parent organisation American Cancer Society to benefit cancer treatment and prevention measures in developing countries.
