The Red Bridge linking Kirchberg plateau to the rest of the capital is to be expanded by two metres with work to begin on October 1.

The idea is to make the bridge wide enough to create four lanes for cars, two for the tram and two for pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction work is expected to last two years.

The bridge, also known as Grand-Duchess Charlotte Bridge, was constructed between 1963 and 1966.

It is being adapted to accommodate the new tram line linking Kirchberg with Luxembourg City's central train station.

The 40-million-euro bridge project will see the bridge given a new lick of paint.
