(AP) Germany's finance minister is dismissing media reports that Chancellor Angela Merkel is lobbying across Europe for him to become the new head of the eurozone's finance minister gatherings.

Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Friday it was too early to discuss who might lead the meetings of the eurogroup's 17 finance ministers, adding "we have other duties at the moment than dealing with such speculation."

Current chairman Jean-Claude Juncker, also the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, announced earlier this year that he won't seek another term this summer.

The 69-year-old Schaeuble would likely be a controversial candidate because the finance minister of Europe's biggest economy has the reputation of being a harsh proponent of austerity measures and structural reforms to tackle the continent's sovereign debt crisis.
