Schneider wants to keep Cargolux maintenance in Findel
(CS) Economy Minister Etienne Schneider has said the maintenance department of Cargolux should stay in Luxembourg ahead of a meeting to discuss the situation at the Luxembourg air freight carrier.
In a statement to the Luxemburger Wort, the minister said: “We have to find ways to keep maintenance in Luxembourg. We have to see how this branch can be operated in an economically interesting manner.”
The minister added, however, that certain concessions would be necessary.
Schneider and Transport Minister Claude Wiseler are set to meet with representatives from Luxembourg's unions on Thursday afternoon to talk about Cargolux. “The aim is to find solution to ensure the survival of Cargolux,” Schneider said.
Losing the airline, which plays an important role in the country's growing logistics sector, was not an option, he added.
Some 450 people are currently employed in the maintenance department at Cargolux, based in Findel. Recent reports have suggested that the management of Cargolux was planning to move maintenance operations abroad as a cost saving measure.
However, Cargolux has not confirmed this information, saying that an investigation was ongoing to determine the company's new business strategy.
