Sharks and Jets make splash in Luxembourg
Leonard Bernstein's Broadway classic West Side Story was greeted with rapturous applause by an eager audience in Luxembourg at its exclusive premier at the "Grand Théâtre" on Wednesday.
The invite-only event saw the auditorium filled with dignitaries including head of state Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria-Teresa as well as leaders from the country's cultural scene and politicians.
None could resist the slick precision, energy and colour of the iconic show, which was first conceived by Jerome Robbins with a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and based on the book by Arthur Laurents.
The musical was booked to mark the 50th anniversary of the "Grand Théâtre" in Luxembourg. During the premier, the audience gave thanks to theatre director Frank Feitler, for his efforts in creating a diverse and internationally renowned arts programme at the venue.
In Luxembourg, West Side Story will be performed from January 16 to 26 with no shows on Mondays and two shows on Saturdays. While tickets have sold out, West Side Story fans without tickets may be able to obtain returns on the night at the box office.
