(ADW) It's been on the cards for some time now in many a “will they, won't they” media and governmental debate, but finally a decision has been made: Before 2012 smoking will be banned in bars and nightclubs. The law must pass before the end of the year.

The Health Minister Mars di Bartolomeo confirmed the timetable in an interview with RTL radio on Monday morning.

He also stressed that Luxembourg had, “no intention of adopting a lighter version of the ban”. This means that bars and clubs will not be able to choose to remain complete smoking areas, the rule will be non-smoking for all.

Mars di Bartolomeo already announced in April his intention to adopt a bill to ban smoking in pubs and clubs. He therefore reiterated on Monday his intention to carry out rapid reform.

Despite smoking already being banned in restaurants in Luxembourg for five years, it has often been criticised that this is not enough. This latest announcement will bring the Grand Duchy in line with the majority of other EU countries, who already ban smoking in all bars, clubs and restaurants.
