Spanish defense minister rules out talks with ETA
(AP) Spain's defense minister has ruled out any negotiations with the armed Basque group ETA following the organization's announcement that it will lay down arms.
Carme Chacon told Spanish National Television on Friday, there "is nothing to negotiate with ETA."
ETA on Thursday announced it was ceasing its 43-year-long bloody campaign for an independent Basque state in territory straddling northern Spain and southwest France. It called on Spain and France to open talks on the conflict.
The organization has killed 829 people since the 1960s in shootings and bombings. It is classified as a terrorist organization by Spain, the European Union and the U.S.
Chacon said ETA had not achieved any of its aims.
