Stricter regulations could soon be imposed on the use of smartphones in secondary schools, Luxembourg's education minister has said.

Claude Meisch has confirmed he will put forward a draft law on general regulations within schools with a particular focus on discipline.

Part of this draft law will include the use of smartphones during school hours.

Meisch said some young people use their smartphones to extreme measures, sometimes going against the existing legislation.

He has now assigned a team to find out how smartphones can be used as a teaching tool in various subjects.

The minister also pointed out that pupils can now access canteen menus, order lunch and put money on their account via the Restopolis app.

Primary schools have stricter rules concerning the use of smartphone devices and under the current law children's phones must be switched off within school premises and sound recording can only be done for educational purposes.
