Sun shines on united Europe
The sun shone on a united Europe on Saturday when Europeans celebrated peace and unity with cake and entertainment at a fair in Luxembourg City.
The Europe day celebration also saw scores of European country embassies host stands in Place Clairefontaine to promote tourism and trade.
“We don't have many opportunities to introduce our country here in Luxembourg. This day is perfect for bringing tourism information about Estonia to Luxembourg,” Tuuli Pärnsalu of the Estonian Embassy told wort.lu/en.
A new addition to the annual event was the Slovenian stand, representing the 180 or so Slovenians living in Luxembourg.
The European celebration commemorates two important dates, including the founding of the Council of Europe on May 9 and the origin of the European Union on May 9.
During Saturday's celebration Luxembourg city mayor Xavier Bettel gave a speech urging people to continue to support Europe, particularly through the current difficulties.
For those who missed the fair, a debate about Europe with entertainment will be held on June 30, titled “Europe de demain, c'est vous!”, or You are the Europe of tomorrow. The event, which marks the opening of the “Fête du Citoyen”, is hosted at the Rockhal in Esch Belval from 11am to 6pm and includes a food village serving cuisine from various European states as well as music and cultural performances.
