(CS/str) Construction of the blue bridge across the Pétrusse valley made considerable progress on Tuesday, with a bridge pillar and a lateral beam installed in the early afternoon.

The cross beam was initially planned to go up at 2pm in the afternoon, but preparations in the morning progressed faster than expected, with the bridge pillar in place by 11am.

The installation of the cross beam began around 12.30pm. The beam weighed 38 tonnes and a special crane with a lifting capacity of 400 tonnes was set up for the construction works.

Despite the change in schedule several onlookers gathered to watch from Pont Adolphe and the adjoining area. Among them was Luxembourg City mayor Xavier Bettel.

The bridge should be ready for traffic by the beginning of next year. It will feature three lanes for traffic and a sidewalk for pedestrians.

The temporary construction will allow the renovation of the Pont Adolphe. The bridge's traffic lanes will be made wider by 75 centimetres on both sides. By the end of 2016 the bridge should accommodate two lanes for the tram on one side and two lanes for traffic on the other side.

The blue bridge will then be demolished again.
