(JB) As of today (Friday) smoking is banned in all public places in Belgium, including those which were previously exempt.

The ruling means that smokers wishing to light up in cafés, bars, clubs, casinos and restaurants must go outside to smoke.

Prior to today, Belgium allowed smoking in bars and other venues where food was not being served.

On March 15, 2011, Belgium's Constitutional Court ruled that the ban should apply to all public venues, regardless of whether they serve food.

Smoking indoors will be allowed in venues which provide a separate enclosed smoking space.
