The 2012 World peace forum opened in Schengen at the weekend with exhibitions, interactive workshops and conferences.

The week-long event, which unites international peacekeepers, saw women's issues come to the fore on Saturday with a women's conference calling for females to be empowered to create and maintain peace.

Sunday's line-up focused on the theme of politics and peace, with a debate looking at what literature can do for peace as well as an exhibition of paintings by Sophie Rein inspired by former South African leader Nelson Mandela. The day ended with an appeal to nations to create their own peace ministries instead of ministries of defence.

The 2012 World Peace Forum runs from May 5 to 12 and comprises a packed programme of 200 events including daily seminars and evening cultural events. This year, the forum welcomes speakers and delegates from 40 countries, broadening the platform to exchange best practice in the market of peacemakers.
