Top Berlusconi official urges backing for government
(AFP) Silvio Berlusconi's top deputy said their People of Freedom party should vote for the government in a confidence motion on Wednesday, in an apparent break with the former prime minister.
"I am firmly convinced that our party as a whole should vote confidence in (Prime Minister Enrico) Letta tomorrow," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said after talks with Berlusconi.
Alfano is also national secretary of the party.
Berlusconi on Saturday pulled his party's five ministers out of the government and called for elections to be held as soon as possible.
Letta called the confidence vote, accusing Berlusconi of a "crazy and irresponsible" act.
