If you thought living in Luxembourg was expensive, you may be shocked by prices in Zurich, which has been rated the priciest place to live.

While Expatistan's cost of living index, based on living costs from countries around the world, placed Zurich at the top, Luxembourg was not far behind in 30th place.

In the land of the Schueberfouer, a Big Mac meal will set diners back around 8 euros (compared with 12 euros in Zurich), a Capuccino in an expat café will cost 3.17 euros (4.84 in Zurich) and monthly gym membership (in the business district) around 79 euros (98 euros in Zurich), the ranking suggests.

The index drew on data on a large host of factors, average prices for which were added by contributors to the Expatistan site. These include the cost of groceries, internet, rent in the high-end districts, cigarettes and utilities, among others.

Switzerland featured heavily in the top 10 most expensive places identified with Geneva in third place, Lausanne in ninth and Basel in tenth.

London was ranked second most expensive city thanks to sky high rents and public transport costs, Hong Kong fourth, Singapore and New York in joint fifth, followed by New York, San Francisco, Oslo and Washington DC.

If you're considering moving to Luxembourg or any other city mentioned in the index, Expatistan's website allows for a comparison between two cities, allowing people to know just how much money they will need to earn to maintain their current lifestyle.
