Number of job seekers drops 15% in year
Job market was hit hard by the health crisis a year ago, job agency ADEM said

The number of people looking for work in Luxembourg dropped by nearly 15% in May compared to a year ago when the early stages of the pandemic had forced many people out of employment, jobs agency ADEM said on Monday.
A total of 17,340 people were signed up with ADEM looking for work, nearly 3,000 - or 14.2% less - than the same period a year ago.
“In May 2020 the job market was strongly impacted by the health crisis,” ADEM said in a press release, adding that at the time there was a 33.6% annual increase in the number of people looking for work.
Yet the 1,881 people newly registering with the jobs agency in May represented a 12% rise from a year ago. ADEM explained the increase because a year earlier, more people had enrolled in a government-funded furlough scheme, so-called partial unemployment, to prevent them from losing their job.
As of May 31, 2021, ADEM has 8,865 positions available. Over one year, the number of available positions has increased by 56.4%, as job vacancies are reaching or even exceeding pre-health crisis levels, ADEM said.
